Liam Lance: A Birth Story

Thursday, May 1, 2014

On Sunday, April 13th we went on a walk with Daniel, Hannah, and their boys at Parque Taqueral. I was complaining that I hadn’t felt a single braxton hick in 2 weeks, and was convinced that this little man did not get the memo that he wasn’t supposed to stay in there forever.

We had a good time on the walk... still nothing. But at 3AM I woke up to some mild period-like contractions. I couldn’t fall back asleep, since every time I was just about to another contraction would wake me up. Contractions were long but far between (around 30 minutes apart) until around 9, when they seemed to be petering off. So I decided to go to the gym, and see if I could get things moving. Just as I was reaching down to tie my shoes, the largest contraction that I’ve had up to that point hit and took my breath away. I decided I should probably pack my hospital bag first, just in case. From that point on, the contractions were coming every 10 min or whenever I changed positions (i.e. standing up, sitting down, bending over).

Little did I know this would be my last bump picture!

By 5pm the contractions were around 5 minutes apart, so I took a long shower and insisted we go through with a dinner we had planned with a bunch of friends. I figured it would be the perfect distraction, and it was! So much fun.

When we came back, we got ready for bed and tried to fall asleep around 10. I really tried to sleep since the previous night had been rough, and likely I would be having the baby tomorrow. But lying down only seemed to the make the pain worse. So eventually I got up and hung out in the living room. Thankfully Hilary was around so we were texting back and forth, which I needed desperately.

The next 3 hours I paced around the living room, leaning over the couch and swaying during the contractions, and took another long shower. By 1:30AM dealing with the pain alone was starting to get to me. At this time my contractions were consistently 3.5-4 minutes apart and I called Dorothe (my doula). I felt horrible about waking her up, but like I said I was starting to get desperate.

When she arrived at 2:30, I was dilated to a 4/5. I was pretty happy with that. I got on my exercise ball and that helped a lot with the pain. I sat there for the next 3 hours until we checked again around 5:30, to decide whether we should leave for the hospital before or after rush hour. I was at a 6 so we decided to wait.

The next check was around 9, and I was sure we were ready to head out. The past 3.5 hrs had been the hardest so far, and I was expecting good progress. Unfortunately I was at a 6/7 and that was really discouraging. I was happy to still be progressing, but I couldn’t believe how slow it was going! I was at a 4/5 nearly 7 hours ago! Also the contractions felt like they were overlapping with back labor and pressure from him descending.

After texting back and forth with my doctor, she suggested we leave for the hospital around 9:45 and she would meet us there. We grabbed our hospital bags and headed out.

The car ride seemed to take forever. The contractions were incredibly strong, and I was SO grateful that we decided against staying with our doctor in São Paulo. Nobody seemed to think that a long car ride (minimum 2 hours) was a big deal, but I beg to differ! Alex was so crucial during this part. He would guide us in breathing together, while my eyes were tightly shut to block out the traffic and anything else.

Priscila (my doctor) was late in arriving and we needed her there to fill out some forms. It felt like we were waiting in that stupid room for ages! I could practically feel everyone in the waiting room staring at me, and I can't really blame them. I was teary eyed, swaying obsessively, and of course intense breathing. The pain coupled with a distracting and hectic atmosphere was making concentration so much more difficult- and therefore managing the pain. Whenever someone asked me a question I could barely manage a whisper in response, all my energy was invested in focusing through the pain.

By the time my doctor arrived and checked me (an hour and a half later), I was at a 9. This was when it got bad. For this, they brought me into a temporary room that appeared to be a doctor’s office with a large desk and medical bed. Alex and Dorothe were downstairs filling out paperwork, and it was just the doctor and I.

Her checking me was really painful, but I realized after a bunch of water gushed out that it was because she was breaking my water. After doing so, she got back up and went to sit at the desk. In a panicky voice I asked, “did you just break my water??” She looked up dismissively, said yes, and went back to whatever she was doing on the computer. I was now soaking wet and alone, and suddenly the pressure seemed to skyrocket. Naturally, I started to panic. Was I going to have this baby here, without Alex?? She told me we would be changing rooms soon, but when I told her I was soaking wet she just motioned to a paper towel dispenser across the room. I shuffled over there, totally baffled, and tried to mop myself off. Then threw up. This room, that didn’t look like it was supposed to be used for this type of thing, was quickly turning into a disgusting mess. Water everywhere (and I was continuing to leak), and now throw up all over the floor and all over me. Is this too much information? It was gross.

After what seemed like an eternity, Alex and Dorothe got there. They helped me change into a hospital gown, and soon they brought in a bed to wheel me to the delivery room. I begged them to not make me lie down, but they insisted. That ride was the very worst! Alex was walking along side, trying to calm my breathing that was quickly escalating.

Right before they wheeled me in, they told Alex and Dorothe that they had to change their clothes. I (very) reluctantly let Alex go, while they brought me into a room that looked a lot like a lab. Everyone was wearing hair nets (which they put on me too), matching clothes that covered every inch of their bodies, and masks. Not even my doctor was there yet, but they had me move to yet another medical bed and told me to “lay down and start pushing.”

This is when I semi lost it. Nobody I knew was there, and I most definitely did NOT want to lie down and not ready to push. I was struggling to find the words for this in Portuguese, and at this point my breathing was more like hyperventilating. I was panting “where’s my husband??” and “I’m not lying down!” and causing a frantic scene I’m sure. But it was traumatizing being surrounded by so many people that I didn’t recognize, and telling me things I was struggling to understand.

Finally Alex, my doula, and my doctor came in and they moved me to a little stool that we had decided beforehand I would use for pushing. As we were doing this, my doctor asked if I wanted an epidural. I looked at her like she was nuts. I was about to start pushing! Thankfully, getting an epidural hadn’t even crossed my mind up to this point. With all the mental imagery and being in a peaceful environment at home, I was able to handle the majority of the labor just fine. And through all the chaos at the hospital, there wouldn’t have been time anyway. But I had really prepared for a natural birth, and was so happy that it worked out!

Pushing was intense, but thankfully short lived. Probably a set of 4 contractions and our little Liam came!

After he came out, they put him right on my chest. At first he didn’t even cry and I was completely in awe. He was so beautiful- one of the first things I noticed was his adorable lips when he started to pout and cry. I couldn’t believe he was mine, this little baby that had been in my stomach growing the past 10 months. The little guy whose kicks and rolls I cherished so much. Now he was here! In my arms! It is a moment that is so hard to describe into words. Such a moment of pure, heavenly joy after enduring more than you ever thought you could.

At 6.7lbs and 19 inches, he was the most perfect thing I had ever seen. It amazed me how much love you can feel for someone you just met, and how quickly and exponentially that love grows. Basically those long 10 months and then the labor, was so so worth it.

Our Little Liam

Tuesday, April 29, 2014

Liam Lance Hill was born 2 weeks ago today, and we are all in celebration mode over here. He was born at 12:09, at 6.7lbs and 19 inches. We couldn't have been more thrilled to meet our little guy five days early!

There have been a lot of snuggling, kissing those perfect cheeks, and trying to figure out how to care for a teeny tiny human. Life is so good.

Here are a few favorite phone pics from the last 2 weeks-

This Pregnancy Thing

Saturday, April 12, 2014

Tomorrow marks 39 weeks. Sometimes, it feels like I've been pregnant for years. Other times, I start freaking out that this little man could come anytime and I reeeally don't feel ready at all.

Everyone knows about the downsides of pregnancy. In my case, it is nothing too out of the ordinary. Elephant feet/ankles, heartburn, back pain...blah. I'm sick of hearing and talking about it.

Don't get me wrong, I'm excited to get on with it.

But want to hear about some of the good parts?

I love having this buddy with me all the time. It is so comforting. When I'm furious, happy, sad, you name it- it doesn't matter, a little kick of assurance always makes it a little better. Even to the ribs. And whatever I'm doing is usually put on hold, because there is nothing better than feeling those sweet squirms and kicks! It is such a miracle, and I will miss that part.

Long hair. Like, the longest in my life. I need to get it trimmed, but at this point it's a pride thing.

Waking up in the night to Alex's hand on my belly. That is a killer.

Nesting. (finally.) I've always been relatively clean, but never...like this. You should check out my closet drawers sometime.

VIP treatment in Brazil. This is a big one. Special parking spots, check out lines, and much more. The other day we showed up at a restaurant with at least an hour wait. But when they saw me (and it didn't take long) we were seated within 5 minutes. Now that is the life.

And really, nothing beats the "I'm 9 1/2 months pregnant" excuse. This move has been kinda rough (basically, everything broke after the first week here), but I'm finding all I have to do is explain my "dramatic" situation. "The baby could technically come at any time, so I really don't have time to wait around!" ...And POOF! A handyman shows up. I've never seen anything like it in Brazil. Magical.

So there you go. Don't you wish you were pregnant now? Haha.

The crib is set up. Nearly all the boxes are gone. Teeny tiny Gerber onesies are washed and carefully folded. We now have hot water, a working fridge, washer and dryer (have you heard the news that I used a dryer for the first time since August?? Because I've been telling everyone and their dog), and flooding is donezo. It cracks me up that internet was originally "the priority". It comes when it comes and I'm content. Best of all, the sunset each night from a 15th floor window is nothing short of spectacular. We're getting ready for you, mah dear!

It's All Good

Tuesday, March 25, 2014

Woah, things are changing over here.

We're moving. Yep, leaving our adorable house to a pretty rocking apartment an hour and a half away, in Campinas. That means I'm changing doctors and hospitals. I'm also 36 weeks pregnant. (Aka a week away from considered "full-term" by some sources.) BAH!

We decided we wanted to move just a few weeks ago, so there have been a lot of quick decisions going on. I don't really like quick decisions. Especially when they are relatively big- like where we'll be living the next few years, and who will deliver my first baby.

But you make it work. Because actually this move is going to be GREAT and so.worth.it. We will be closer to Alex's work (10 minutes versus 2 hours), closer to these wonderful gems, and more. Plus I'd rather have everything settled in our new place than have to move with a newborn.

But let me just say, this "nesting" pregnancy symptom that I've heard so much about is finally starting to kick in and drive me insaaane. The possibility of having this baby early- while everything is in boxes waiting to be moved.. is kinda torturous. Every time I walk by our crib, which is dissembled in various parts, I visibly cringe. Just hang in there a few weeks longer, okay baby?

Below are some pictures from lately, which include a bump that grows daily, delicious homemade pretzels, and a surprise rose from "Women's Day". We decided to "splurge" and go out to dinner at the nice restaurant by our house. Turns out, it was THE best day ever to do this. After seating us, they brought over this gorgeous rose, glass of champagne (apparently the pregnant belly didn't phase them), and presented a specialty, once-a-year 5 course menu. I was beyond dazzled, to say the least.

By the way- I officially loove this holiday. {Shocker.} How come this is the first time I have heard of it?! Somehow I feel totally ripped off. But here's to future celebrations! Because what kind of person maniac wouldn't want to celebrate themselves??

Not my best work, but not bad for a first timer either!

Sunday Stroll

Monday, March 24, 2014

We went for a stroll with my camera last Sunday, which hasn't happened in a very very long time. I absolutely love where we live. Aldeia da Serra is basically a little vacation spot up in the mountains, the perfect getaway from São Paulo's bustle and hideous traffic. The air feels so clean, it is always a few degrees cooler, and you really can't beat that view. Of course, the mooing friends only add to its charm.

Baby Shower Bliss

Friday, February 28, 2014

Life has been oh so good lately. I was in the U.S. last week, which is (as always) all sorts of bliss. Not to mention THREE baby showers. For me. Spoiled rotten, much? I don't have many pictures yet, but the first was done by my amazing sisters at my aunt Christine's house. It was soo great to catch up with old friends- ugh I wish I had taken pictures! I'm furious about it. ANYWAYS, the next was in my mother-in-law's home. Thus the to die for baby cake! Not to mention homemade french macaroons and amazing company. Last was brunch-style at my mom's. You simply can't go wrong with a crepe bar and family. I am still in awe over how generous people are!

If the fact that a little man is growing inside this belly hasn't hit me yet, it sure is now. And I have theeee most adorable outfits/blankets/toys/books/moccasins to show for it. I can't get enough! Baby gifts put me in a ridiculously odd state of mind.

Is it weird I want to "joy ride" my sexy stroller around, even with no baby to fill it yet? Or if I had a doll I would totally play dress up with these new baby clothes? Yes, it has absolutely crossed my mind. I'm unabashedly turning into one of those baby-crazed people. Heaven help me.

An Early Valentine's

Tuesday, February 11, 2014

Valentine's Day for us was February 8th. I'm leaving for the U.S. this week, and so we (aka me) wanted insisted on celebrating beforehand. I have learned that the "we'll celebrate later" never actually happens, and I LOVE VALENTINE'S DAY. It's romantic and cheesy and wonderful.

Of course, a big part of any holiday is the food.
1. I come from a family of food fiends.
2. Pregnant. Enough said.

It results in a dangerous and delicious combination.

The problem is, restaurants here give me a major headache. If they're good, you pay an arm and a leg. If you want to pay normal-ish prices, you could probably make something better at home. There have been several times when I'm sick of cooking, we try someplace new, and I always seem to regret it a little.

Which brings me to a delicious Valentine's at home. We agreed that Alex was in charge of breakfast, and I would cover dinner.

...Until the next morning when I woke up, looked over, and instantaneously caved. Alex had taken a 1AM flight from Natal for a recruiting event the day before, went straight to the office, and didn't sleep at all. So I slipped out and made our recent favorite with a little twist. German pancakes topped with sauteed cinnamon apples. To die for. Naturally, it was a breakfast in bed kind of day, which makes everything taste better.

(FYI: I love these for many reasons. Quick to whip up, cleaning is ridiculously easy, minimal amount of butter- why do some recipes call for so much? In my opinion it is unnecessary and can get greasy. Oh, and sooo tasty, of course. You can find the recipe below.)

Basically, it was looking to be a fantastic day. But at 10:30AM everything was put way, way over the top when our container arrived. Remember that ol' container, with all our belongings that we sent off 7 months ago? The container that, among a thousand little things- has my favorite shoes, furniture, Alex's ties, pictures, my grandma Joan's retro dishes, journals, and KitchenAid? That's the one. I was convinced it wouldn't make it, somehow mixed up in all the craziness of moving internationally- and I was pretty much at terms with it.

February 8th was like five Christmas's wrapped up in one. Every box that I opened was followed with an ecstatic shout of glee, possible fist pump, and a smile that practically split my face in two while rustling through all the things I almost forgot we had. Let's just say I was reeeeally feeling the love this Valentine's Day.

Our house is still a huge mess and full of boxes, but it is by far the most beautiful mess I've ever seen. I'm kind of relishing in it.

With all the chaos that comes with moving, our little V-Day was almost tossed to the side. Luckily I had assembled the lasagna the day before, and rest of the menu was simple despite navigating through boxes. I tore myself away from all the fun around 6pm (no sarcasm), and told Alex I was going up to shower and get ready. I gave him the serious responsibility of the dinner's ambiance and to take whatever creative liberties he wanted. Is it bad I didn't expect much? I love him, but he's a guy.

After a refreshing cold shower, squeezing into a red dress, putting on makeup, and writing a love note- I walked downstairs to (in my mind) an insanely romantic sight. We have yet to find the screws to assemble our dining room table, so a coffee table and couch cushions set for two were ready to go. Somehow in the mess of boxes he found the red china from our wedding and my grandma Joan's glass goblets that I love so much. The heart garland I made a year ago was hanging up, and pictures of us were adorably propped up along the walls. And music. He kills me!

I quickly snapped a few pictures, without bothering to see what they looked like. Totally don't do it justice. Honestly, the best moments are when taking pictures feel like a chore. Plus, I was starving.

The Menu:

  • Lasagna (so far, this is my favorite. 2 homemade sauces- bechamel and marinara with four types of cheeses- I added a little catupiry)
  • Spinach salad with candied walnuts, bacon, and balsamic vinaigrette
  • Macaroni Grill rosemary bread
  • Hot fudge pudding cake with ice cream

Dinner took hours. We ate slow, talked, even played cards. And went back for more. After, we read through "a little love story" that I started writing not too long ago. I realized that besides bits and pieces in my journal, I've never written our entire story out. I wanted to get Alex's commentary, so I told him to interject whenever and I'd add his comments in. Overall, the day left me feeling like the happiest girl on the planet, as the lovey-doveyness of Valentine's Day tends to do.

And now for a little recipe...

German Pancakes with Cinnamon Apples, adapted from here

6 eggs
1 cup milk
1 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons butter

1. Add eggs, milk, flour, and salt directly in a blender. Blend until smooth.
2. Pour melted butter into an ungreased 9x13 dish. Gently pour the batter in.
3. Bake uncovered at 400 degrees for 20 minutes.

For the topping:
2 apples, sliced

1 tablespoon brown sugar
Cinnamon to taste

Add all the above ingredients into a skillet. Cook and stir over medium heat until apples are tender. Spoon over baked pancake, and serve with lemon wedges and powdered sugar if desired.
